A BRIEF HISTORY OF SHAVED ICE
As legends go, Baltimoreans have been enjoying shaved ice since the 1800s. The ice man while delivering ice to businesses in Baltimore on hot summer days would shave off some ice and give it to the local kids. The children would run home quickly with their ice and their mothers would make a sweet sryup from eggs, vanilla, and sugar. The Baltimore Snowball , Egg Custard was created.
Some businesses caught on, too, and snowballs were sold as intermission treats at theatres in the summertime as the perfect way to cool down in hot venues that didn’t have air conditioning.
During and after the Great Depression, the easy and cheap treat became known as the hard times sundae or the penny sundae. Making snowballs was also a way for those who fell on hard times to make extra money. Even during World War II, when milk and sugar were rationed, snowball sales remained strong.
Hello, I am Christina Cossey and the proud owner of Bitterroot Snowballs. Some of my best childhood memories were going to the neighborhood snowball stand with my grandfather. With our snowballs loaded with Marshmallow we would sit at the picnic tables at the stand and enjoy our delicious icy concoctions . My favorite was Egg Custard with Extra Marshmallow & my grandfathers was Chocolate with Marshmallow. I wanted to continue this tradition I enjoyed so much with my grandchildren and other families. I am so thankful to be living in such a beautiful family oriented community, such as Hamilton Montana serving up smiles and memories one snowball at a time.
